It was *oktō, which produced Sanskrit astáu, Latin octō (source of French huit, Italian otto, and Spanish ocho), Greek októ, and Irish ocht. Its prehistoric Germanic descendant was *akhtō, source of German and Dutch acht, Swedish åtta, and English eight.
