- hull

[hull 词源字典] - hull: [OE] The notion underlying the word hull is of ‘covering’ or ‘concealing’. It originally meant ‘peapod’ – etymologically, the ‘covering’ of peas – and comes ultimately from the same Indo- European source as produced English cell, clandestine, conceal, hall, hell, and possibly colour and holster. It is generally assumed that hull ‘main body of a ship’, which first appeared in the 15th century, is the same word (a ship’s hull resembling an open peapod), although some etymologists have suggested that it may be connected with hollow.
