来自韩国式古汉语。kim-,来自古汉语菹(zu),腌菜,泡菜,原义为剁,即剁碎的蔬菜(参照成语“人为刀俎,我为鱼肉”),进入古朝鲜后念jeo或ju音,chi-,即菜,念ji音。该食物在三国时期传入韩鲜半岛,拼写后来被修正为jimchi,最终被修正为kimchi.比较中国式英语pidgin,来自19世纪中期上海开埠时中国人对business的发音,在欧洲人听起来就是pidgin或pigeon,因此这种中国式英语就被嘲讽为pidgin English.
