- Old English eanian "to bring forth" (young), especially in reference to sheep or goats, from Proto-Germanic *aunon (cognate with Dutch oonen), from PIE *agwh-no- "lamb" (cognates: Greek amnos "lamb," Latin agnus, Old Church Slavonic agne, Old Irish van, Welsh oen).
